Maison Malfroy was born in 1939 in Lyon, France—the historic capital of silk. Its origins lie in the founding of the silk textile company Malfroy Million, specialized in printed scarves, by textile experts André Malfroy and Jean Million. Establishing their base in the heart of Lyon’s silk-producing district, they drew upon the artisanal expertise and networks handed down through generations, constantly striving for the highest quality.
Despite the severe challenges of wartime France, the business saw a surge in demand following the end of World War II in 1945. Thanks to their specialized techniques and commitment to materials, the company steadily gained recognition both domestically and abroad. It actively expanded into markets culturally and commercially tied to France—including the United Kingdom, Egypt, and Lebanon.
In 1953, André Malfroy’s son, Henri, joined the family business, applying his education in textile schools and experience abroad to promote expansion into Germany and Scandinavia. By the 1970s, Malfroy successfully entered the American market, further strengthening its international presence.
Under the leadership of three generations of the Malfroy family, the company has endured a turbulent era and continues its journey—now spanning over 80 years.
To this day, Malfroy’s headquarters remain in Lyon, firmly rooted in the city’s traditional silk heritage. For the brand, silk is more than a luxurious material—it is a medium for artistic expression. Through scarves that convey color, brushstroke, and texture, each creation becomes a wearable work of art.
Since its founding, Malfroy has faithfully used a traditional method known as “Lyon-style” printing, which involves delicately layering one color at a time. In the 2000s, the company adopted digital printing technology, allowing for broader color expression and greater precision. This blend of tradition and innovation fulfills the brand’s vision of faithfully reproducing artworks on silk.
Malfroy’s materials have evolved beyond silk to include wool, cotton, and more. What all scarves share, however, is the signature French hand-rolled finish and an unwavering commitment to quality craftsmanship.
Since 2015, Malfroy has actively collaborated with numerous contemporary artists. Painters such as Blandine Galliardi, Christian Bilger, Hélène Vandel, Sofia Alomar, Juliette Lagrange, and Alain Thomas have each contributed new creative visions to the brand’s collections.
Among these, the Vietnamese-French artist Thanh Thuy holds a special place. Her vibrant and powerful work—created while living with Down syndrome—has been featured in Malfroy’s collections every year since 2016. A portion of the proceeds is donated to a Vietnamese charity, and this initiative has received global recognition as a project embodying generosity and inclusivity beyond the realm of art.
Recent collaborations include a collection inspired by The Little Prince, joint creations with Parisian influencers, and projects with Lyon-based architect and illustrator Emilie Ettori. Malfroy’s creative universe continues to expand.
Malfroy scarves are timeless creations that express tradition, innovation, and emotional richness. Each piece carries a story that gently accompanies and adds color to the life of the wearer.
